낙랑파라

Hongdae is known for many things, such as its boisterous night life and its artistic flair, all marked by youth vibes. But it’s also the home of secret cafe spots that bring the much needed rest and serenity in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Nak Rang Parlour, the name of the first coffee shop to ever open in Korea, has been standing for forty years in the Yeonnam neighborhood. Filled with antique household goods, it will get you feeling some sort of way with the wave of nostalgia that hits you. IMG_9848IMG_9832 IMG_9833 IMG_9834IMG_9836 IMG_9838_1

Now, to the main event of food. We got the melon shaved ice and the red velvet cake. Although it looked very appetizing, the melons were not yet fully ripe and were too bitter to eat, unfortunately. IMG_9841 IMG_9842 IMG_9843

I highly recommend the mango shaved ice, which I tried the first time I went to Nakrang Parlour last summer. Needless to say, my mom and I destroyed it within minutes. They use fresh mangoes, instead of frozen ones, and the shaved ice is refreshing without being too milky or watered down with sweet condensed milk.

So the next time you’re around, pop in Nakrang Parlour and enjoy yourself at the self-proclaimed “oasis in the alley.”
